CERN has received the Nature et économie label for its contributions to biodiversity. CERN's site is home to a wide range of plant life including 19 species of orchid, some of which are very rare.

CERN's environmental policy includes a commitment to minimize the environmental impact of the wide range of activities the Laboratory carries out in the course of its research.
- Ensuring the level of environmental safety and protection specified by European standards and directives.
- Monitoring all parameters that might reveal any impact on the environment, such as those related to atmospheric emissions, effluent water, radiation, consumption of electricity and production of waste.
- Improving continuously its environmental performance through an Environmental Management System.
- Informing the Host States, France and Switzerland, as well as the public of the results of its Environmental Monitoring Programme.
